To transfer to your Kindle (with WiFi), you will browse our Overdrive collection and checkout titles as always, but make sure to check out the Kindle version. Once your titles are checked out, instead of the download button, you will get a button that says “Get for Kindle.” Once clicked, this will take you to Amazon’s website. Make sure you are signed into your Amazon account. From there, click “Get library book,” and check the appropriate device (if you have more than one) to which the title should be delivered. Turn on your Kindle, and the title should be there in seconds.
A few things that we have discovered are:
1) If you own a first generation Kindle, which only had 3G, not wireless, you can only transfer library titles by hooking up your Kindle to the computer using a USB cable. Overdrive titles will not be delivered via 3G, only wireless.
2) While you can get the eBooks to an iPhone, iPad or other smartphones and mobile devices, the download must be initiated on the computer, not through the mobile site.

Returning Kindle Titles

It is possible to return a Kindle library eBook early, and have it removed from your library record. This must be done through Amazon.

1) Go to www.amazon.com

2) Sign in to your account.

3) Click “Your Digital Items” near the top right.

4) Under “Kindle” click “Manage Your Kindle.”

5) You should have a list of all titles you have purchased, or have checked out from the library. Library titles are marked “public library” in orange.

6) Find the title you wish to return. On the right there will be a button marked “Actions.” Hover the mouse over that button.

7) Click “Return this book.”

8) When prompted, click “Yes.”

9) Click “Actions” again to remove the title from your Amazon library.

You can still do that, of course, but Audio-Visual Services now has 2 download stations. These are computers dedicated only to downloading and transferring eBooks and eAudiobooks. Feel free to come in and try them. The procedures are slightly different then they are when downloading at home, so we’ve included instructions to help. Don’t worry if you can’t remember them all! We have them posted right next to the download stations.
If you’re coming in to use the download stations, please try to bring your own cables. We have a few around, but we may not have the correct one for your device.

DOWNLOADING & TRANSFERRING eAUDIOBOOKS

1) Sign in to your eAccount.
2) Browse the catalog to select a title.
3) Make sure the selected title will work with your device.
4) Click “Add to eBookBag.”
5) Click “Proceed to Checkout”
6) Select the desired lending period—7 or 14 days.
7) Click “Confirm check out.”
8) If you haven’t already, plug your device into one of the USB ports on the right side of the computer.
9) Click “Download.”
10) Click “Next.”
11) Select the desired parts to download.
12) Click “Next.”
13) Wait for the download and transfer to complete. This could take a long time, depending on the title.
14) Click “Finish.”
15) Sign out of your account.
16) Don’t forget to take your device and cable with you.

DOWNLOADING & TRANSFERRING eBOOKS

1-9) Repeat steps 1-9 from above.
10) Once you start the download, a bar at the bottom of Internet Explorer will ask if you want to open, save, or cancel the download. Click on open.
11) Adobe Digital Editions should now automatically open. The prompt for the setup assistant will open at this time.
12) Click on “Continue.”
12) Next you will have to authorize this computer with your Adobe ID and password. If you do not already have an Adobe ID, see a librarian at the reference desk. They will help you get one. You will need to deauthorize this computer when you are finished.
13) You will now receive a prompt to continue downloading your title. Click “Continue.” After the download, ADE will open. If your eReader has not yet been authorized to your Adobe ID, you will receive a prompt to do so now.
14) Make sure you are in the “Library” view of ADE. To do so, click the icon that looks like books on a shelf in the upper left corner.
15) Your device will now appear in the left hand column.
16) Drag and drop your book over to your device. Once it is done, you will need to hit crtl + shift + d on the keyboard at the same time. You will receive a prompt to de-authorize Adobe Digital Editions. Click “Deauthorize.”
17) Your will receive another prompt to quit. Click “Quit” and ADE will close.
18) Books you have downloaded will not be accessible by anyone but you. If Adobe Digital Editions opens and there are other eBooks shown on the screen that you did not download, do not delete or open them, as your Adobe ID will not be associated with them.
19) Be sure to deauthorize your Adobe ID with the computer before leaving the station. Also be sure to sign out of your library account before leaving. If at any point you are having trouble, please ask for help at the reference desk.

I won’t bore you with how wonderful and fun it is, but rather will focus on getting eBooks on your iPhone. eBooks can be downloaded on a number of smartphones (including my late Blackberry), but the process can be cumbersome and difficult on some. I found it all to be very user friendly on the iPhone.
The first step is to download the Overdrive Media Console app. This can be accomplished in two ways. The first would be to go to the library’s website on your phone, in the digital media area. http://www.akronlibrary.org/emedia/ebook.html#ipad From here, you can click (tap?) the highlighted Overdrive Media Console, and install the app. The easier way would be to use your phone’s App Store feature, and search Overdrive Media Console. Install from there. You will also need to authorize your device with an Adobe ID. Follow the directions on the screen.
Once you have the app, click Get Books then Add a Library. I’ve found that the zip code search doesn’t work very well (I got hits for several branch libraries, but not the Akron Main Library.) Click  Browse for Libraries, United States, and then scroll down to Ohio. From here, the Akron-Summit County Library should be the third one listed. Click on our link, and you’ll be into the eCatalog.
In the eCatalog, you can browse not only for eBooks, but for eAudiobooks as well. The only formats you will be able to use on the iPhone will be EPUB for eBooks and MP3 for eAudiobooks. These should be the only formats listed in the eCatalog on your phone. To get a title on your phone, simply click Add to eBookBag and Proceed to Checkout. You will need to log in with our library card number and PIN. Once you confirm checkout, click the Download button. Your title will begin downloading immediately. If you are downloading eAudiobooks, you will have to change your settings to enable WiFi, and connect to an available network. eBooks can be downloaded using the 3G or 4G. Downloading eAudiobooks takes longer than eBooks, and will drain your battery faster.
This procedure will also work with the iPod Touch, and I believe the iPad as well. I haven’t tried it on the iPad yet, as I have not yet been gifted with one! (hint, hint to my family)
